We all need a holiday once in a while, but sometimes a holiday can end up proving to be anything but.
Take step one: booking your holiday. This should, in theory, be the easiest part of your journey to Relaxationville and yet it will almost always prove to be excessively laborious and fiddly. Even after you’ve chosen a venue and hotel you’ll inevitably find yourself on the merry-go-round that is the hotel or travel agent’s booking systems, twirling and twirling fruitlessly until you simply need to jump off before you get nauseous. If you do eventually get through to the final step you’ll probably end up typing in your credit card details at least a dozen times. But then you’re done. Hurrah, you’re off on holiday!
Step two is actually getting there. The journey can be smooth and uneventful, but it’s unlikely. The flight will almost certainly be late, if not cancelled due to some exploding Icelandic volcano, leaving you sleeping on the departures lounge floor. Once you’re on the plane you’ll be inundated with annoying announcements galore that make you want to kick the seat in front, if your legs weren’t already pressed against it due to the lack of legroom.
And then you get to the holiday, which you’ll probably spend worrying about the stressful journey you’re sure to face on your way home, the sunburn you’ve acquired within 3 minutes of arriving, and indeed how you’re going to afford to pay for all of this when the bills come at the end of the month.
