The many advantages of a pair of good hiking boots

Hiking boots are footwear specifically designed for walking and hiking purposes. Any hiker would tell you that they are the most essential part of the hiking gear since they ultimately affect the potential of a hiker to walk faster, further and with greater safety.

Hiking boots are specifically designed so that they remain comfortable no matter the distance or the roughness of the ground while also protecting the hiker’s feet from water, mud, sharp stones, rocks, thorns and whatever else nature brings their way.

A pair of good hiking boots is absolutely essential for any serious hiker but they are also ideal for other outdoor activities, such as trekking, mountaineering, climbing, backpacking, hunting and anything that involves exploring nature on foot. They support the ankles, helping to avoid sprains and injuries while not restricting the movement. They also protect from scratches, scarring and all other evils caused by nettles, thorns and thistles.

However, it is not simply a matter of owning a good pair of hiking boots. The best walking boots will need to fit well so that they achieve maximum support for the leg and protect from blisters, soars, bruising and whatever other discomforts come with walking long hours on rough terrain.

To make sure that a boot fits well, it is not enough to wear it and check that the size is right. You need to also adjust the shoe tailoring it to your own foot. Most injuries happen not because there was something wrong with the footwear but because they were not properly adjusted.

First thing’s first, if your pair is brand new it is best to walk it for a couple of days at home before you go hiking so that it adapts to the shape of your feet.

It is also important to remember that laces should be tight differently according to the terrain. If you are walking uphill you need to have the bottom part of the laces tighter than the upper. Downhill, you need to have the upper tighter than the lower.

Many hiking boots may initially feel like they are the right size, and indeed be the size you normally wear, but in time you discover that they hurt you. In fact, if you speak to experienced hikers they will all tell you that you need to buy at least half or one size bigger than what you usually wear. To make sure that the boots fit well before you spend any money on them, push your heel backwards as far as it goes. If there is one or two centimetres space in front of your toes then the size is right.
